A pump control check valve and special surge equipment may be required instead of a conventional check valve when the main pump station is operating on a high pressure head or pump fluid through a very long main pipe (ie five miles). A quarter turn plug or ball valve equipped with an electric, pneumatic or hydraulic power actuator and electrically connected to the pump circuit is used as a pump control check valve. The pump control valve opens and closes in a matter of minutes to slowly change the fluid velocity, thereby preventing surges in the long power lines. In addition, the use of a pump control check valve can provide significant power savings due to its low head loss.
